Hi there good folks.
Well life can be a little dull occasionally at the Park Slope seed ranch and
studio. In fact today I am just plain BORED.
Fortunately YOU can help. It's also often a little too serious in
the competitive New York jazz scene. With 8000 students matriculating from Jazz
Universities based in Manhattan every year (not to mention blow-in Aussies and
Israelis and Eurotrash) and about 2.5 gigs/clubs left its get tough. Happily
here at Seed Music, as always we have created the necessary stress release
valve and escape route.
For the purposes of promoting excellence in the art of jazz humour I have
inaugurated the first:
SEAN WAYLAND INTERNATIONAL WORLD WIDE WEB FUNNIEST JAZZ SOLO COMPETITION
http://www.seanwayland.com/funniest%20arc%20competition.mp3
This is the rhythm section track from the tune "Arc Etude" from my CD expensive
habit. After Donny McCaslin struggles to complete one of my very cool yet
unfortunately unplayable (by the best in the business) head there are 2 chorus
of bass and drums only. The tune is loosely structured around a B flat version
of Gershwin's "I got Rhythm".
My hope is that thousands of you will over overdub solos by any means you can.
Book "Avatar" if you wish or just use Thomas Edison's original Phonograph if you
have it lying around (although in disagreement with Walter Sear I wouldn't
trust one of those sonically , as Thomas Edison was deaf, regardless of the
things "specs").
There are no real "guidelines", hopefully I will be rolling on the floor upon
hearing your entry (video entries also accepted). Entries will close July
5th, 2063. Winner will receive something.
I plan to post the "finalists" entries on this site. If you post a video entry
on "youtube" and notify me I will post a link to your entry here (this is the
preferred method of entry).
The judge(s) (Sean Wayland) may also enter and deem himself winner.
As a guideline I have included a sample entry here www.seanwayland.com/funny%20arc.mp3
I detuned the D+ triad all over my keyboard down a 4th to create it.
As the composer of "Arc Etude" unfortunately for
yourselves (and possibly me too) I will become the copyright owner of your
solo on my composition (thanks to the ingenious system of copyright laws in use
in the US). I found this out when I considered posting here some Kenny
Kirkland Transcriptions. After consulting a lawyer I was surprised to find that
the "copyright" in his most of his best solos belongs to one of the Marsalis
brothers or Kenny Garrett. In the current world where anything decent is
already freely available on the internet (swimming in more cr%p than you can
poke a stick at) I wouldn't get too worked up about your rights. Lie down and
take it like the rest of us quietly please.
Please email your best efforts or just post them somewhere and send me a link.
If you cant think of anything stupid enough for this competition and just want
the world to know you are a "killing badd As# mofo" please send me a recording
of that, preferably overdubbed on my boys playing a rhythm changes.
Thanks and I look forward to your entry (pardon the pun).
Best regards
Sean Wayland
